FRAMED MEMORIES
Celebrities came in full force to view Deepti Naval and
mum Himadri’s painting exhibition at Dusk on Wednesday
evening. Titled, ‘Memories of Another Day’ the
showing was an emotional moment for mother and daughter.
One heard Deepti say, “I never thought I would ever
exhibit my paintings. The fact that I’m doing it with
my mother makes it incomparable.” As people kept pouring
in one heard Nana Patekar remark, “Deepti should not
take ‘pangaas’ with her mum when it comes to
paintings. She’s her mum, after all.”
OVERHEARD - Himadri Naval saying, “I revisited my
ancestral homes in Amritsar and I have cried while I worked
on these paintings.”

THE MEMORY REMAINS…
When you add a li’l bit of ‘memories’
to art, they become, well, priceless. That’s exactly
what Deepti Naval and her mother Himadri Naval ventured
to do and more than succeeded at their art exhibition at
Bandra on Wednesday evening.
With Deepti having roots in Bollywood, it wasn’t too
surprising to see the likes of Ketan Mehta, Sarika, Soni
Razdan and Deepa Sahi, Nana Patekar came in his favorite
white kurta and kolhapuri chappals. After scanning through
the art display, he proceeded to Himadri Naval to seek her
blessings.
Vibhuraj Kapoor played co-host, ensuring that the arteratis
– Cintan Upadhyay, Jenny Bhatt and Vilas Shinde were
having a good time. Nothing better than an evening spent
with art, family and friends what say?

Sharing a moment
with Mama |
‘WORKING WITH MOTHER IS LIKE ATTENDING A PERSONALISED
ART CAMP’
What prompted you to have your art displayed along with
your mother, painter Himadri Naval?
My Mom is based in the US and on my last visit to the US;
we took a trip to a small artist’s village in South
France. That triggered us to work together. And now it’s
finally happening.
How does it feel to have an exhibition
with her?
It’s a lovely experience. She’s a renowned painter
herself so apart from the obvious comfort level there is
also great respect towards her as an artist. I love attending
art camps, and working with her was like attending a personalized
art camp. I get my artistic genes from her and I’ve
learned painting from her. So, it’s obviously fun
and there is still so much I can learn from her.
Are you working on similar themes?
My Mom will be doing pastels, while I’m doing oils.
Her work is a reflection of her experiences in her old house
in the city, where she used to live before moving to the
US, whereas my paintings are reminiscent of my trip to the
Kumaon hills.
Your earlier work raised quite uproar…..
The painting called Contradictions (dubbed ‘the pregnant
nun’ by people) was purely a reflection of the conflict
that I was undergoing. It wasn’t an attack on any
religion.
It’s your birthday today. Do you
have anything special lined up?
No. It will be a quiet affair with friends and family.
