STORY
A modern day Mahabharata, ‘Hum Paanch’ is a film about the complete and uncompromising triumph of good over evil. Arjun, Bheema, Sooraj and Sundaria’s two brothers, all of whom have many grievances against the Thakur, now unite to get their own back on him. They mount an indoctrination campaign to turn the villagers against the Thakur, which only results in all of them being sent off to jail for violence and rioting. In the last sequence, the Thakur breaks down, begs forgiveness from Sundaria, whom he drove to insanity, his widowed sister and the rest of the village, he has so happily gypped. Bhima’s love for Lajiya becomes the bone of contention between him and his Malik, the Thakur.

Bapu’s first hindi remade Putana Kangal’s Paduvarahalli Pandavaru(1978) derived froma popular Mahabharata lgend set in the feudal up. The villainous zamindar veer pratap singh(Puri) is duryodhan, his side kick lala(Kanhaiyalal) is shakuni and their opponents are the drunken holi man ( Krishna(Kumar), Bhima(Chakraborty), Arjun( Babbar), etc. The good and the bad perform with starightfaced conviction(which prevents the film from becoming a comedy) a story reduced to a series of action thrills. In many respects this feudal drama ironically echoed Benegal’s Nishant(1975), a resemblance reinforced by the presence of Puri, Azmi and Shah.
